Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe
The Coupe originally referred to as the “Daytona Car” officially obtained its name while
being prepared for the Daytona race. Original there were only six Daytona Coupe’s built
and were designed by Peter Brock while working for Carroll Shelby. The Daytona Coupe was
the first and only American made car to ever win the World Manufacturer’s Championship for
Grand Touring race cars and transformed American road racing. The Daytona Cobra Coupe also
set 23 International USAC/FIA records, at Sebring 12 hours of endurance. The record set
was an amazing 150-mph for 12 hours.
Superformance (CEO) engaged in discussions with Peter Brock to design a street version of the 1965
Daytona Coupe that won the World Manufacturers Championship. The Superformance Coupe became a reality
and was produced with sleek lines, and a contoured body which was slightly larger than that of the
original race car. This Superformance Coupe was produced for a number of years but a sports car
with the heritage and image of the Coupe begged for improvements and new features to make it a
worthy contender in the market in which it already is one of the most sought after contenders.
This awareness led to the development of the Shelby CSX 9000 being produced to replace the SPF Daytona Coupe.
This famous marquee will in future be marketed as a Shelby product carrying a CSX9000 series chassis number
making it eligible for listing in the Shelby World registry. Each CSX 9000 will obtain a Shelby-issued MSO
certificate and chassis tag.
The new Coupe features Shelby signature door handles and seat covers, and the stopping power for the
powerful Coupe will be provided by Shelby branded brakes but that is not all. The seats have been
repositioned and the steering wheel moved over to the right to increase the clearance between the
drive’s head and the roof as well as between the driver’s left hand and the A – post. New external
door handles do not mar the sleek look of the coachwork and facilitates entry without the use of a
remote key. Electric windows have been fitted and the side air intakes behind the doors now form
part of the rear panel behind the B-pillars with an added quarter vent style window aiding visibility.
Gear heads will be delighted with the improved front and rear independent suspension.
This development includes the replacement of the rose joints with ball joints. The new design facilitates
the adjustment of camber, caster and toe adjustment up front, as well as easy camber and toe adjustment at the rear.
To eliminate noise, the front and rear anti-roll bars have been redesigned and the chassis has
been stiffened. The fuel tank with internal baffles incorporates a swirl pot design. The oil
cooler has been separated from the radiator and fitted in an area with adequate air flow, the
radiator core diameter has been increased and more efficient radiator fans were fitted.
In keeping with modern design, the heater and climate controls for the
air-conditioning are operated via servo units, the side muffler pipes have
been increased in diameter to ensure a deeper rumble, and the wheel wells
have been adapted to accommodate 18” Shelby Cobra rims.
The new Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe - CSX 9000 series shares all the visual magic of the
original, but is just so much more sophisticated and will have enormous appeal in the market
for full-blooded American retro-styled collector sports cars.
