1962 Shelby 50th Anniversary 289 Slab Side
The introduction of the Shelby Cobra in 1962 is still recognized today as an automotive game-changer. Carroll Shelby took the sports car world by storm when it introduced the CSX2000 Cobra. Shelby American took the AC “Ace” chassis, inserted a new small block Ford engine and re-engineered the car to handle all the additional power. Weighing only 2,020 pounds, the Cobra easily vanquished sports cars from Jaguar, Chevrolet, Porsche, Aston Martin and others. When its racing heyday was over, the cobra became one of the most sought-after collectibles by an American manufacturer.
To celebrate that history, Shelby American released a limited edition of 50 special Cobras in 2012 commemorating the 50th anniversary of the roadster's debut. Part of the CSX8000 series of continuation Slab Side Shelby Cobra roadsters, all were painted a rich black color with custom red interiors.
CSX8966 is one of those exclusive 50 Shelby Cobras. As such, its detailing includes 50th anniversary badges on fenders and hood, an anniversary badge on the steering wheel, and 50th anniversary floor mats.
This sports car is powered by a Ford Racing 363ci V8 topped with Weber carburetors, and generates 500+ horsepower. A custom cooling system was made for this drivetrain setup which includes heat shields, spacers, and a thermostatically controlled fan system for the carbs. The engine is dressed with period Cobra valve covers. The powerful small-block is mated to a Tremec TKO600 5-speed manual transmission.
To deliver a true vintage sports car experience, the CSX8000 series Shelby Cobras retain the authentic style leaf spring independent suspension, but are upgraded to contemporary standards. Tucked behind the 15-inch hard-spoke wire wheels are 4-wheel disc brakes with Shelby calipers.
